Gangotri

Location of Gangotri

The ideal place to worship God, and also a location to quench the thirst for adventure, Gangotri is the origin of the River Ganges. Gangotri attracts loads of tourists every year.
The enchanting nature and the mystical aura around this place have left people mesmerized. There is a supernatural touch attached with this place.

Embedded in the wonderful Garhwal hills, Gangotri at an altitude of 3,048 meters is very near to the Indo-Tibetan border. From Dehradun, Gangotri is about 300 km, 250 km from Rishikesh and 105 km from Uttarkashi. Temperatures in Gangotri during the summers are also moderately low with freezing cold winters.

Major pilgrim attractions of Gangotri

  • Gangotri Temple: This temple of the 18th century is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. Mythologically Ganga is supposed to have touched earth at this juncture. The temple is about 20 feet tall and made from white granite.

  • Nandanvan Tapovan: This is the base camp for the Bhagirathi peaks, giving panoramic view of the neighboring Shivaling peak.

  • Uttarkashi: This is an important pilgrimage centre at an altitude of 1,150 mts. on the banks of Bhagirathi. While in Uttarkashi, visit the Vishwanath temple, Ekadash Rudra temple, Gyaneshwar temple and Kuteti Devi Temple.
