Throughout the Indian landscape, there are numerous airports. Twelve of them are international airports and the rest are domestic airports. Almost all major Indian cities like: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and other state capitals have an airport.

Airports in the metro cities are mostly international airports, which are regularly services by many international airlines to and from all corners of the world. Some of these international airports also serve as domestic terminals also wherefrom you can travel to any domestic sector.

Alongside the government run airlines like Air India, Indian Airlines (now renamed as 'Indian'), several other private airlines operate in India. Air India is a full-fledged international airline while Indian Airlines is a domestic one. But Indian Airlines operate in a number of international sectors too. Indian Airlines possibly has the largest operational network among the domestic airlines in India.

Now-a-days a number of low cost airlines have stated their operation in many Indian cities. The phenomenon has certainly given a boost to the Indian aviation industry. Many passengers who used to travel in higher classes by trains now prefer to travel by air since fares are almost at par. Sometimes special offers even prove cheaper.

A large number of international airlines including the Government owned airlines like Air India & Indian Airlines connect India from major foreign countries to India. Of late Jet Airways & Air Sahara has started international operation to destinations like Singapore, London, New York.

An extensive network of nearly 80 domestic airports (a few of them are not operational at the moment) connects the major cities in India. Air travel is the most convenient way to cover a large country like India.

The recent phenomenon of introduction of low cost airlines in India created a stir in the travel scenario of India. They offer a faster and easier travel within India easier without burning a hole in your pocket. They offer online air ticket booking and very cheap airfare.
