TRAVEL TO BODHGAYA

If you are looking for a spiritual upliftment, perhaps you should travel to Bodhgaya, the Buddhist pilgrimage center. The small town of Bodhgaya in Central Bihar came into prominence in the 6th century with Buddha's enlightenment or Nirvana under a Bodhi tree in Bodhgaya.

The history of Bihar throws light on the fact that Bihar was the birthplace of Buddhism.Interestingly, the origin of the name 'Bihar' can be traced to 'viharas' meaning 'monasteries', which abounded in Bihar with the spread of Buddhism. The tourist attractions in Bodhgaya are associated with the life of Gautama Buddha. In the 3rd century, the great Mauryan ruler King Ashoka built a small shrine at the spot where Buddha had got enlightenment. Subsequent rulers left their mark on this shrine, which finally took the shape of the famous Mahabodhi temple. Another place associated with Buddha is the Animesh Lochan Chaitya, the place where Buddha is believed to have spent one week looking toward the great Bodhi tree where he eventually received enlightenment. Under the Bodhi Tree one can find the Vajrasana, a stone platform on which Buddha is believed to have sat in meditation. These sites have helped in tracing the life of Buddha and his teachings.

Excursions from Bodhgaya can be made to neighboring places like Gaya famous for its Vishnu Temple, Nalanda which is famous as an ancient center of learning and Rajgir known for its rock-cur temples. Among the events and festivals in Bodhgaya, BuddhaPurnima is perhaps the most popular with Buddhists. Those looking for spiritual solace can attend discourses conducted by the meditation centers in Bodhgaya.

The hotels in Bodhgaya, the spiritual city caters to tourists and pilgrims alike. If you are looking for statues of Buddha, then shopping in Bodhgaya will be ideal with the wide choice available.
