The tourist attractions in Gangtok are museums, monasteries and scenic spots. The Deer Park is a must see place which affords a breathtaking view of the valleys surrounding the city of Gangtok against the backdrop of the elegant Mt. Kanchenjunga.The park also has animals and rare ones too like the red panda and the Himalayan Bear. Dul Dul Chortena built under the supervision of the late Most Venerable Rimpoche and is a place of worship for the Tibetan Buddhsits.
Other monasteries in Gangtok are Pemayangtse Monastery dating from the 17th century and the Labrang Monastery about a century old, both belonging to the Nyingmapa sect. The Royal chapel, Tasuklakhang within the palace grounds has a large collection of Buddhist scriptures.
The Tsomgo Lake is a serene lake considered by the Buddhists to be a holy lake. Another beautiful lake is Kechopari with placid and crystal clear water amidst dense forests. Tashi viewpoint is a popular picnic spot from where you can enjoy a mesmerizing view of the enchanting Kanchenjunga.If you have an ailment or if you want to rejuvenate yourself then you should visit the Phurchachu Hot Springs. Excursions can be made from Gangtok to Changu Lake, 35 kms away famous for its cool and placid waters and the picturesque locale. Chungthang is also worth a visit because of its religious significance, which is interesting. The Sikkimese and the Hindu soldiers in the Indian Army believe that guru Padmasabhava had rested in this place and left three footprints for his devotees on a solid piece of rock. The Sikh members of the Indian army believe that the footprints are those of Guru Nanak.
