Indore is better known as the industrial and financial capital of Madhya Pradesh.However it maybe a less known fact that the city of Indore abounds in tourist attractions - palaces, monuments and temples which speaks of the historic past of the city.
The prominent tourist attractions in Indore are the architectural marvels belonging to the Holkar dynasty. The Rajwada or the Old Palace, located in the old city, is a 200-year-old palace, which belonged to the Holkar dynasty. It is a perfect blending of the occidental and oriental style of architecture- the French, Mughal and Maratha styles. Lal Bagh, another architectural marvel was used for holding important meetings and celebrations and reflects the opulence and aesthetic sense of the Holkars. Among the temples in Indore, the Kanch Mandir or the temple of mirrors is a famous one. This Jain temple built by Sir Hukamchand Seth n the early 20th century has plain exteriors but dazzling interiors brilliantly done up with intricate mirror work.Even the paintings are done in colored glass depicting stories from the Jain scriptures. The Chattri Bagh near the Khan River has a number of Chattris or memorial canopies dedicated to the Holkar rulers. The Bada Ganapati Temple in Indore is a must see place. As the name suggests, this temple built in 1875 has the largest Ganapati in the world. The statue made of metallic frames of gold, silver, copper, brass and iron measures to about 8m.
Excursions from Indore
Excursions can be made from Indore to interesting sites nearby. For the spiritually inclined, a trip to the Omkareshwar temple a few kilometers away form Indore would be an experience. It is located on an island shaped liked the Hindu symbol 'Om' and lies at the confluence of the Narmada and Kaveri rivers. It is significant as one of the 12 jyotirlingams of India. Located 91 kilometers from Indore is the small town of Mahesh war. Besides the fort and temples Maheshwar is known for its Maheshwari saris produced by the local weavers. The holy city of Ujjain lies at a distance of 56 kms from Ujjain.It is famous as one of the centers of Kumbha Mela.The Mahakaleshwar Temple, the temple of Har Siddhi Mata and the Gopal Mandir should be on the itinerary of the religious tourist. Mandu, 99 kms from Indore is a historic city with a plethora of monuments reflecting the royal splendor of past ages. Patal Pani, 36 kms from Indore is a fascinating destination with a 150 feet high waterfall falling into a deep gorge, the bottom of which is believed to be touching pathal (nether world).
Festivals in Indore
The famous festivals in Indore are the Navratri celebrated at the Bijasen Mata Temple in the months of September/ /October. The Anant Chaudas festival takes place around September with large processions taken out and eventually the idols of Ganesha being immersed on the Anant Chaudas night. Rangapanchami is celebrated five days after Holi in the month of February/ March where instead of colors, the sound of music fills the air. Ahilya Utsav is also a famous one, which commemorate the death of the brave queen Ahilya Bai.
