TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN JABALPUR

Jabalpur is one of the most important cities in the state of Madhya Pradesh.Jabalpur is the administrative and educational center in Madhya Pradesh. Jabalpur is also important because it is the gateway to important wildlife sanctuaries around it. Interestingly, the name Jabalpur is derived from the Arabic word 'Jabal'which means 'mountain' pointing to the ancient trade connection with Arab countries.

History of Jabalpur
The history of Jabalpur dates back to the epic times. There are references to Jabalpur in the epic Mahabharata.Jabalpur has seen the rise and fall of many dynasties. Jabalpur was for a long time under the Mauryas and the Guptas.Then it was taken over by the Kalchuri dynasty who made Jabalpur the capital city. The Gonds seized it later by the 12th century and Jabalpur became the powerful kingdom of Gondwana.The Mughals kept invading the place but Gondwana always fought back .In this regard it is significant to remember the legendary Gond Queen Rani Durgavati who died fighting the Mughal forces led by the Mughal Emperor Akbar.Jabalpur finally fell to the Marathas in the 18th century and in 1817 the British took over when they overpowered the Marathas. The British made Jabalpur the commission headquarters of the Narmada territories and established a cantonment here.

Attractions in Jabalpur
The tourist attractions in Jabalpur are the Rani Durgavati Museum located south of the bazaar. The museum has a good collection of artifacts. It also has a section dedicated to artifacts and photos related to Mahatma Gandhi. Another place to visit is the Madan Mahal, a Gond fortress built in 1116. Located on a rocky hill this fort provides a panoramic view of Jabalpur city. Tilwara Ghat is significant as the place from where Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were immersed in the Narmada.

Excursions from Jabalpur
Excursions from Jablapur can be made to interesting sites around the city. A must see place is the Marble Rocks, 22 kms from Jabalpur. It is a gorge on the River Narmada with different colored cliffs dotting the gorge, which offers an impressive sight. , especially in moonlight. The adventurous can hire a rowboat and travel through the 2 km long gorge and enjoy the breathtaking sights, of cliffs on both sides of the Narmada River and the Dhuandhar waterfall near the gorge. The wildlife enthusiasts should visit the Kanha National Park, 160 km from Jabalpur famous for its wildlife safari and bird watching. The Bandhavgarh National Park is also nearby, about 197 km north east of Jabalpur.Although smaller than Kanha, it has a higher population of wildlife.
