TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN JODHPUR


Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination in Rajasthan, foregrounding a rich cultural legacy against the rugged majesty of the desert locale. Located in Western Rajasthan, Jodhpur is the second largest city in the state of Rajasthan.

History of Rajasthan
Founded by Raja Jodha of the Rathore clan in 1459,the city of Jodhpur has witnessed a chequered history. Numerous battles have been waged by the neighboring states to possess the wealth of Jodhpur. Eventually, the ruler of the city signed a treaty with the British in 1818,to ensure the safety of the people and the city.

Attractions in Jodhpur
The tourist attractions in Jodhpur are the palaces and the forts, which are sentinels of history. A must see attraction in Jodhpur is the Mehrangarh Fort, which was built by Rao Jodha in 1806. In the fort, one can visit the Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Moti Mahal, Daulat Khana and Sileh Khana.It also displays the second largest cannon in Asia. Near this fort is the white marble cenotaph, built in the 19th century. Another attraction is the Umaid Bhawan Palace, which was constructed so people could find employment during the famines. There is a museum in the palace that has rarities, antiques and relics of the past like costumes, tea sets, clocks, timepieces and paintings. The palace has now been turned into a heritage hotel though part of it is still royal residence.
Excursions from Jodhpur
Excursions from Jodhpur can be made to neighboring places, which will give you an insight into the history of region. You can make a trip to Mandore, the former capital which is 8 km from Jodhpur. Here you can visit the old cenotaphs of the Rathore rulers. There are also sixteen deities carved out of the rock face are also fascinating. A temple tour can be planned too starting off with the famous Osian, which is 65kms northwest of Jodhpur, which has many ancient Jain temples and a famous Sun temple. You can also visit the Mahavira temple and the three Vishnu temples. For those keen on adventure should take a safari and explore Jhalmand, which also has an 18th century mansion. A picnic option would be Mahamnadir and Balsamand Lake besides Sardar Samand, which used to be a hunting lodge.
