On the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra River, Kaziranga National Park, sprawls over an area of approximately 430SqKms in Assam. The place was declared a wild life sanctuary in 1940.
An interesting story goes into the establishment of this sanctuary. In 1904 Lady Curzon visited Kaziranga in the hope of watching rhinos. Contrary to her expectations, she ended up seeing only a few hoof marks. She understood that the species is endangered due to constant poaching and convinced her husband Lord Curzon to do something to protect the species. That is how Kaziranga came into being as a conserved forest land.
Till today, the biggest of all tourist attractions in Kaziranga is the one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros Unicornis). The muddy swamps and the tall thickets of elephant grass provide ideal home for this rare species.
A variety of birds are also available in Kaziranga, which is home to Black-Shouldered Kite, Black Kite, Pallas's Fishing Eagle, Grey-Headed Fishing Eagle, Oriental Honey Buzzard, Brahminy Kite, White Tailed Eagle, Himalayan Griffon.
Jungle safari on elephant back is one of the tourist attractions in Kaziranga. Elephants are widely available in Assam. Trained elephants guided by Mahouts would take you inside the jungle and offer great opportunities to see the wild lives in their natural habitat.
