TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN KOTA


Kota is famous for its palatial palaces, forts and monuments. Located in the southern part of Rajasthan, Kota is also synonymous with Kota Doria saris and the Kota School of miniature paintings.

History of Kota
The history of Kota is intertwined with the Rajput and Mughal rule in India. In the 12th century, the Rajputs had conquered the Chambal valley and formed the two states of Kota and Bundi on either side of the Chambal River, with Bundi as the capital. With the Mughals gaining prominence Emperor Jehangir made Kota an independent state in 1624.

The Rao Madho Singh Museum, named after the first ruler of Kota is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kota.The museum which was once a palace has a superb collection of Rajput miniature paintings, exquisite sculptures, frescoes and armory. Jag Mandir, located in the midst of an artificial lake, Kishore Sagar is a beautiful red sandstone monument. Besides boating in this picturesque lake, which dates back to the 14th century, you can also visit Kesar Bagh, which is famous for its cenotaphs. If you are interested in the lifestyle of the people of this region from the medieval times, then you should visit the haveli of Devta Shirdharji with its splendid frescoes, lovely wall paintings and beautifully designed rooms.

Festivals in Kota
The most prominent festival in Kota is the annual Dusshera Mela. It is a 12-day celebration held in October.
