The experience of Kumbhalgarh travel is a fascinating one as this place has a number of attractions for tourists. Kumbhalgarh, a fortified city in the Mewar region of the state of Rajasthan in India, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India.
Kumbhalgarh is home to the impressive Kumbhalgarh fort. Kumbahalgarh fort dates back to the fifteenth century. It was inhabited by the famous king Udai Singh, before he built the beautiful lake city of Udaipur. However, the area on which the fort was constructed bears remains belonging to a much earlier period, including the remains of old Jain temples built by the grandson of Emperor Ashoka, the Mauryan king. There are the remains of numerous other old Jain temples within the fort.
The great Rajput warrior king Rana Kumbha further fortified the region with a expansive wall that is believed by some to stand second only to the Great Wall of China, and the massive and virtually unconquerable Ram Gate. Rebuilt and reconstructed throughout the eighteenth century, the fort is an awe-inspiring wonder on a hill of the stark Aravalli mountain range. The fort was traditionally known as the eye of Mewar because of its strategic location that provided it with the necessary elevation to keep an eye on its neighboring enemies from Marwar and Gujarat.
The highest point of the fort is the beautiful 'Badal Mahal' or chamber of the clouds, named so because of its height. This beautiful hall has a number of exquisitely painted and decorated rooms and apartments. It also provides a great view to the surrounding countryside. There is a highly sophisticated ventilating and cooling system in this hall that dates back to the 19th century. Presently the fort is a museum, and a must visit for tourists to Rajasthan.
Kumbhalgarh also has a wonderful wildlife sanctuary. The total area covered by the sanctuary is 586 square km. The sanctuary is inhabited by a wide range of fauna including sloth bears, wild boars, panthers, antelopes as well as a number of attractive birds like egrets and cormorants. The greatest attractions of the Kumbhalgarh wildlife sanctuary are the crocodiles, whose breedings are scientifically monitored.
Kumbhalgarh is located at a distance of about 85 km from Udaipur, from where it can be easily approached via road and rail. Kumbhalgarh is also well connected to most important cities of Rajasthan. The airport that is closest to this place is located at Udaipur, which has an important domestic airport that connects the city to major Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Aurangabad, Jaipur and Jodhpur.
