Puri is a renowned pilgrimage site in
Orissa. The land has a rich history along with its religious association. Adi Shankaracharya, the great Hindu saint and philosopher, established the oldest math in the city.
Puri along with
Bhubaneshwar and Konark form the "Golden Triangle" in eastern India. Jostling crowds, narrow lanes, blaring traffic, congested bazaars, aggressive pandas (priests of the temple) although are very unlikely of a spiritual pilgrimage but the within all this clamor and clutter the vibrant Puri comes alive.
A travel to Puri would take you to a land of numerous temples where myths and legends still shroud over.
The famous temple of
Lord Jagannatha welcomes you as you travel to Puri. The temple apart from its religious significance is a superb architectural specimen too. Many other temples,
ashramas,
maths that are peppered in and around the city of Puri would for sure give you a religious overdose in your travel to Puri.
Travel to Puri during the time of
Ratha Yatra (Chariot festival), when the image Lord Jagannatha is shifted from one temple to another on a huge chariot and the city plays host to one of the greatest congregations in the world.
Although a beachside destination, Puri is not a typical beach retreat. Do spend some time on the sun-kissed sandy beach along the boisterous Bay of Bengal, or take a dip in
Sawrgadwar (link to Tourist Attractions in Puri page) to secure heaven after death, as you travel to Puri.
Apart from all these, you may also choose to take short detour to the traditional craftsmen's village of
Raghurajpur (link to Tourist Attractions in Puri page) and
Pipli (link to Tourist Attractions in Puri page) and also the well-known
Chilika Lake, a haven for the bird watchers.
