The little village of Sanchi, which house a number of significant Buddhist monuments, lies a little away from Vidisha in
Madhya Pradesh. The place of Sanchi has a rich history, which dates back to as early as 3rd century BC and spanned over till 12th century AD.
Among other major Buddhist sites in India, Sanchi has a singular distinction. Despite not being associated with any significant event in Lord Buddha's life, it emerged to play a key role in the evolution and spread of Buddhism as a major religion in India. More striking fact is that although Sanchi remained at the peak of glory almost covering the whole range of Indian Buddhism, there is hardly any reference of the place in ancient literature.
Legend has it that
Ashoka the Great had married
Devi daughter of a merchant of
Vidisa (modern
Besnagar near
Bhilsa or
Vidisha) during his halt there on his way to Ujjayani as a viceroy. Their son Mahendra is said to have visited his mother at Vidisa, and the latter took him up to the beautiful monastery of Vedisagiri built by herself.
