About Trichy



The city of Tiruchirapalli is also known as Trichy. It is the fourth largest city in the state of Tamil Nadu. The river Kaveri flows through the city. It also has a few reserve forests along the banks of the river. Trichy also has a few hills along its south western borders.

Climate



The climate of Trichy is pleasant thought the humidity level is high. As in most of the other regions of Southern India, the climate here too consists of warm summers and mild winters. Compared to other parts of the country Trichy experiences late monsoon season that commences from the middle of October and continues through till January.

Historical Background



  • The city of Trichy was under the rule of the Chola dynasty. However it had passed on to the hands of the Pallava dynasty followed by the rule of the Pandya dynasty.
  • The kingdom of Trichy had also come under the rule of the Madurai Nayak Dynasty. A significant contribution of this dynasty in the history of Trichy was the Rock Fort which stands till today as a mark of one of the most important architectures of Trichy.
  • Trichy continued to be an important kingdom during the rule of the Later Cholas who had regained control over it.
  • In the early years of British rule under the East India Company Trichy was conquered and annexed to their dominions in the South. It was an important feat for them in the establishment of their kingdom in India.

People



The population of Trichy consists of a multilingual group that has people speaking Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam, Marathi along with English and Hindi. Though the majority of the people of Trichy are Hindus there are sections of the population who are Muslims and Christians.

Trichy was the home to many a scholar of Tamil Literature in the ancient times who thrived under the patronage of the Chola dynasty and left valuable contribution to their names. Trichy was also a centre of fine arts during the ancient times. It is a city that has deep roots set in areas of art and architecture some of which can be seen till today.

In modern times Trichy is well known as an industrial city. Besides being home to renowned industries like BHEL and Golden Rock railways workshop Trichy has in some of its places to offer various things as the following
  • Karur

    – well known for its exquisite collections of handloom products like bed linen and floor coverings. The handloom industry here forms the main occupation of the people over here.
  • Koraikudi

    – this town has some of the best remains of the architectural feats of the Chettinad people. The people here were traditionally rich and therefore lived in palatial and splendid accommodations that are a visual treat even today.
  • Pungalur

    – this is the hometown of the Tamil Nadu newsprint and Paper Limited which is one of the biggest paper manufacturing companies of southern India.
  • Kumbakonam
