The most significant of all tourist attractions in Umaria is the Bandhavgarh National Park, which lies only 32kms away from the town.
Dense jungles of Bandhavgarh with lush green vegetation replete with a variety of flora and fauna are the major tourist attractions in Umaria. Sprawling over an area of 448sqkms, the National Park boasts of more than 22 species of mammals and 250 species of birds.
The diverse fauna of Bandhavgarh includes: leopards, gaur, chital deer, sambar deer, Dholes, nilgais, wild boars jungle cats, chinkaras, sloth bears, rhesus macaques, black faced langurs, hyenas, porcupines, jackals, foxes, wild dogs, chausinghas and rattles.
Also there are a variety of birds. You may see steppe eagles, white browed fantails, grey malabar hornbills, green pigeons, black and white malabar hornbills, blue bearded bee eaters, white bellied drongos, parakeets, green bee eaters, blossom headed parakeets, Jerdon's gold fronted leaf birds, owls, wood shrikes, minivets and the lovely paradise flycatchers.
But to cap it all, tigers are the biggest draw for the wild life enthusiasts. This is one of the few remaining havens of Royal Bengal Tigers in India. At the same time you may also come across white tigers here. In 1993, the Project Tiger was launched in Bandhavgarh to preserve and increase the tigers.
Jungle Safaris by Jeep or on elephant are taken out regularly in the National Park to facilitate wild life watching.
The old fort known as Bandhavgarh Fort adds to the tourist attractions in the rugged terrains of Umaria. A little away from the National Park, the fort extends over an area of 560 acres at a height 800meters. Numerous temples punctuate the road leading to the fort that house a 7-meter high statue of Lord Narasimha (the reincarnation of Vishnu in the form of half human-half lion).
